Garden Madness

Here is a glimpse at what is happening in our lives, the garden more specifically. It takes a good chunk of time!

I spend many mornings picking tomatoes. Morning is the only time that is remotely tolerable and even them I’m covered in sweat after a short while. Sometimes the boys will help, other times not so much!

It may be difficult to see in some of the photos since it is pure tomato madness, but many of the plants have fallen over. They just refuse to be staked up, we need a telephone pole to hold them! Since I’m the only person that really eats tomatoes around here I give many away or roast them. When I have two sheet pans full I roast them with olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic. Then they go for a ride in the blender and poured in a quart jar and frozen. So much easier than canning in this heat!

This is our first year trying to grow eggplant. Not sure how this little guy is going to do….

It is also our first year with okra. Maybe I’ll get enough to fill an entire jar to pickle!

We also have one lonely pumpkin. Somehow nothing else grew on the vine. I recently planted more so fingers crossed I can roast pumpkin this fall!

Going along with a squash theme we have some yellow squash growing now too. The zucchini are just about done and now it’s time for yellow. I actually still have several zucchini in the fridge I need to use soon should the time present itself.

Here is my new dining room table centerpiece, a platter of spaghetti squash and butternut squash. I am running out of places to put all the produce! The butternut squash vine died so one of them is pretty darn little.

The garden is also starting to produce some peppers. The sweet peppers didn’t fair too well but the hotter peppers are coming along.

And finally the watermelon. The boys are anxiously awaiting these. I think we could easily eat one in less time than it takes to cut it!

Do you have a garden? What’s growing now where you live? We had several things that didn’t make it at all this year. Too hot? Who knows! It’s always a mystery as to what is successful. We need to try more things in the fall though. Usually I’m worn out after the summer and we don’t plant much then.

I love all it Gretchen!! My Dad has a ton of tomatoes, but they are all green, it really has been too cool at night so they will not turn, but they are HUGE!! A few have come in though, we have eggplant, kale, lettuce, cucumbers, onions, peppers, asparagus, oh and green beans. I have been getting some from him, but I can’t wait tell more comes in. I can’t wait too see how your watermelon turns out…YUM!!! ENJOY!!!! đŸ™‚

Our green beans don’t look like they are going to do much. The tomatoes are great though and the peppers are just about kicking in full force. Time for some spicy food!

Love the pics of your garden! I wish I had the space for a garden like yours. I just have a little raised garden and I have two tomato plants (grape and yellow cherry), lots of jalapenos, basil, and cucumbers. I had radishes, spinach, and carrots earlier this spring. We have gotten almost 8 quarts of blueberries off of our blueberry bush. I’ve been making lots of pico de gallo with my tomatoes and jalapenos.

All your garden goodies sound delicious! Our blueberry bushes are in their first year so only the animals have gotten fruit off of them. I have been roasting up tomatoes and freezing sauce a few days a week. Of course I’ve been eating plenty of fresh tomatoes as well and giving lots away too. I think I may have to start a few more plants from seed this weekend and see if I can get some to grow at the end if the summer.

That sounds a great way to keep some tomato freshness without bottling. I would love some fresh tomatoes right now. Back to only having cricket balls available so I steer clear of them. Much prefer waiting till they are back in season and haven’t travelled so far.

I just can’t bring myself to can or bottle so many tomatoes in this heat. All winter long I dream of garden tomatoes as store bought are horrible.

The spaghetti squash looks divine. I love the colour and size. At first i thought you had a bug on your plant then later realized it’s the eggplant….I really had a good laugh. Everything looks great and the photos are great as usual!
