In My Kitchen – May 2017

April was a busy month for us so let’s just dive right on in!  My favorite season began, strawberry picking time!!  I took the boys during spring break and they each picked a gallon.  I intended to make jam but just never found the time.  We ate many of the berries as you can imagine.  Some were put on top of the turrets of a vanilla cake, served with more berries and whipped cream.  The rest were frozen for later use.

April also happens to be my birthday and anniversary month.  I’ll try not to overwhelm you will all the kitchen goodies I got, saving some for another post.  I got this lovely hammered tray which I’ve used quite a bit already.

Hammered Tray

I also got this marble tray.  It’s great for serving cocktails or carrying wine glasses.  Or a mug of tea and a special sweet treat.  Or in this case also showing off some new pot scrubbers from my Mighty Fix shipment from Mighty Nest.  They are made from corn cobs!  I’ve yet to use them.

While visiting my parents I went pottery shopping with my mom.  This dish I picked out and she bought for my birthday.  It’s perfect for holding european butter.

Pottery Butter Dish

I also bought myself this lovely rimmed plate/platter.  It’s been used a bit too.  You might have guessed by now I’ve got a pottery fixation!

Sean tagged along on the pottery trip with and picked out this mug.

I like to say the dog got me these cute pinch bowls for my birthday.  One of her very expensive medications had a rebate that came on a visa gift card.  I used it to buy myself the bowls from Facture Goods.

I ordered this adorable egg board from Farmhouse Pottery for Easter.  I don’t have a deviled egg plate and decided it was time to get one.  But this board is so much better than a plate, I love it.  We had deviled eggs on it for Easter.  I didn’t manage to get a picture of the deviled eggs, they disappeared way too quickly!

Egg Board

During April I was cooking from The Food Lab by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt for an Instagram cookbook club.  One of his flavor bombs is marmite so I ordered it from Amazon.  Unfortunately I never got around to making the roast recipe I planned on.  I’ll use it soon though, no worries.  It’s an amazing cookbook, full of science and cooking.  It’s changed the way I cook many things.

Marmite

I think that’s enough for now.  I’ll save some more for another IMK post.  I’m linking up with Sherry over at Sherry’s Pickings.  She’s our new fearless leader so head on over to find links to other IMK blog posts across the globe.  Thanks Sherry for taking over!

I’m nit sure I’m up for trying marmite or vegemite on toast. I’ll use it with as a flavor enhancer in a roast or stew! May is proving to be as crazy busy as April was.

Marmite’s eaten by Kiwis and Poms, Aussies eat vegemite, it’s a food preference that divides households. Vegemite is much more intense and with no sweetness to it at all. I’m curious to see what you intend to make with it Gretchen. Fresh bread, thickly spread butter and your “mite” of choice is bliss for those brought up with it. I like your pottery, but simply love that beaten metal tray!

Thanks Laura! Just when I thought April was busy, May seems to be even crazier. I can’t say I can pick a favorite tray either, they are both fantastic and have different uses.

Oh my… that hammered tray is divine. I would have thought the marble one would be too heavy for carrying trays of drinks but I suppose it depends on how big it is. I laughed when you told be that those yellow things were pot scrubbers – I thought it was egg pasta! Hop over to my blog and look up ‘Vegemite Scone Ring’ – I think you’ll find that Marmite is a perfect substitute. Remember – a little goes a long way ; )

I’m back from a break from blogging and reading blogs so enjoyed reading your post. Thanks for sharing

So glad to see you back to blogging. I haven’t even gone anywhere and can’t seem to fit blogging into my schedule lately. The marble tray is smaller, perfect for a few wine glasses or a cup of tea and treat.

Gretchen, one of these days we’ll have to get your some Vegemite to try! Hahaha…I see Fiona has just said the same thing! Your boys are completely adorable and I always love seeing photos of them (as you know). I’m surprised you came back from berry picking with any berries at all! 🙂 And love your egg board, although I’d probably use it for holding eggs we collected from the garden rather than cooked ones.. xxx

If only you had chickens to give me eggs to fill the board, unfortunately we aren’t allowed any in our neighborhood. He boys def nicely eat their share if berries while picking, though this year was their most focused work. They ate less and picked more. Blueberry season is coming soon…

Gretchen, there are so many things to love In Your Kitchen this month (including YOU) — congrats on celebrating another birthday and anniversary. Celebrate those milestones! Your plates and platters are lovely. I’ve never seen a wooden deviled egg holder before… very cool. Awesome “pinch bowls” too! Great find and blessings on your canine for the “rebate!” xo

Ah how time has passed. The dog rebate was lovely and bittersweet. I just submitted our last one, Cosmo died in her sleep on Cinco de Mayo. The pinch bowls are great and I use them often.

Wow! your vanilla castle cake is amazing; a perfect celebration cake accompanied by strawberries and cream. I can’t wait to hear your future Marmite commentary. :>)

The castle cake is such a fun pan. I’m sure we’ll make a sandcastle cake this summer, maybe next with fresh picked blueberries or blackberries.

celebratory month for you – happy happy 🙂 Great finds, all. And yay for the berry picking. We’re a month or so away from that, too. What a pretty cake you made with them. A cake with turrets – what’s not to love?

I totally love the egg board. It’s so beautiful and skillfully made. Belated Birthday wishes and Belated anniversary, too. I am eating store bought strawberries, right now. I wish I could have freshly picked ones. You get exactly what you want. Thanks for always visiting my blog even though I’ve been so out of circulation. Enjoy the coming week!
