Blackberry Gin Lemonade

Blackberry Gin Lemonade

It’s been a really strange spring.  We started out normal and then wham, two late frosts/freezes.  It wasn’t good for my garden.  All the pepper plants died and several of the tomato plants too.  Luckily the hydrangeas are all right.  I’ve seeded more tomato and pepper plants and hopefully we will still have a great garden, just harvesting a few things later than normal.

The true spring weather came a couple weeks ago and in our house that means weekend cocktails on the porch.  Josh is usually working in his garage on some project or another and I’m either in the garden or doing something in the house most of the day.  Come five o’clock  we’re ready to kick back and relax.

The boys also enjoy cocktails on the porch.  I fix them a pitcher of cocktails, some kind of bubbly juice and seltzer, add a skewer of fruit in a glass and they are as happy as can be.  A plate of cheese and crackers and everyone is loving the weekend!

Cider Martini

Cider Martini
On our recent apple picking outing we got some cider. I just love cider this time of year, it’s great hot or cold. The boys enjoy it with some seltzer mixed in. The grow ups, however, get to play around a little more!

Over the weekend the weather was gorgeous Sunday so we had cocktails on the porch. I tinkered around with a couple cider drinks, and while they were good it wasn’t exactly what I wanted.

Banana Cinnamon Hot Chocolate

Banana Cinnamon Hot Chocolate
I don’t know about ya’ll, but I’m thrilled that autumn is right around the corner. It’s next week you know. Sean’s birthday is actually on the autumnal equinox.

In our neck of the woods it cooled off a little recently. This has me very excited. It’s been hot for so long. Cooler temps are a welcome change. We recently had two evenings of an overnight low of 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Sean asked if we could have a fire after walking home from the bus stop in the morning. Yes, I have some Southern wimps!!

We were also able to finally eat outside again. Most people enjoy meals outdoors all summer long. Here in the South we stay in the air conditioning and wait for September to roll around to eat out again. We had a wonderful meal of rogan josh with homemade naan to celebrate Josh’s birthday. The boys actually came inside to put long sleeves on before we cut the cheesecake. Like I said, weather wimps!

Watermelon Mojito

Watermelon Mojito
This summer we have been eating quite a bit of watermelon. It is the perfect summer food, eat it really cold and the juices are simply refreshing. We’ve had a very hot summer so you can imagine how often we eat watermelon! So why not make some watermelon juice and have a little fun with it!

We grow watermelons in our garden, but so far this summer all our watermelons have been store bought. Our own melons will be ready soon and the boys are VERY ANXIOUS to try them! We’ve had good luck though and all but one of our bought watermelons has been juicy and delicious. Continue reading

Summer Foods Bucket List

I recently discovered Eventbrite and decided to join their Summer Food Bucket List project. It was a bit serendipitious as I just discovered a food swapping group here in my area that does their event planning using Eventbrite. Try checking out Eventbrite event management tools or sell tickets on their site. It’s free and easy. I’ll be looking into that food swapping event this summer.

I have used Eventbrite before, both to host parties (Thanksgiving, birthdays, baby showers etc) and to RSVP for other parties I’ve been invited to and for school events. But what really caught my interest was when I found (and I really don’t remember how I came upon this) a food group here. Midlands Food Swappers is a group that hosts food swaps, kinds obvioius isn’t it. They have a monthly meeting where people can bring in their homemade and/or homegrown food items and swap. What a thought, why hadn’t I heard of this group before. I could take some of my tomatoes, we certainly have enough for an army, and trade them for fresh eggs. Or how about some of homemade jams for meat? The possibilities are endless. So this goes onto my summer food bucket list, try to attend one of these swaps.
