In My Kitchen – September 2016

What a crazy month it has been.  Once again time has flown by so quickly, I can’t believe it is already the beginning of another month.  That brings us to another In My Kitchen post, with Maureen over at Orgasmic Chef hosting this monthly roundup as she continues to heal from back surgery.

In our house August was all about back to school.  Okay, maybe it was more exciting for me than the kids!  This year was our second annual trip to the mountains the last weekend before school starts.  We stayed with Oma and Opa and also went camping for one night.

So in our outdoor kitchen we made grits with smoked sausage, zucchini and onions.  It’s always a challenge coming up with a dinner to cook over a camp stove that will handle being packed in a backpack and staying there for over six hours while we hike and setup camp.  We stepped up our game this time by also packing a box of wine, best thing invented ever (so maybe that’s an exaggeration, but boy did it make the trip better).

Easy Homemade Brownies

Easy Brownies

Brownies are one of the easiest things you can possibly bake.  It just takes one bowl and one pan.  Clean up is easy, even easier if you lick the spatula and bowl  before  you wash them!  This is a classic brownie recipe.  It’s the recipe I grew up on.

I find this recipe to be great for kids, it’s that easy.  You can melt the butter and chocolate in the microwave so you don’t even need to worry about little ones trying to use a double boiler on the stove.

Elderflower Limoncello Prosecco

It’s back to school time and that’s reason enough for celebration!  Parents across the country are dancing in the streets as their children go back to school.  I told our principal I would try not to dance as I left the school last week until I reached my car, though there was a spring in my step!

Back when the boys were younger, even before elementary school or preschool I used to host a back to school playdate for our play group.  It was a chance for moms of school/preschool aged children to get together and celebrate the kids being gone either all day or just for three short hours.

Bacon, Cheddar and Chive Scones

It’s International Scone Week time again!  Now here in South Carolina it isn’t exactly scone weather.  Not many people are willing to crank up their ovens to 450 degrees in this heat and humidity.  I am, of course maybe I have a few screws loose?!

The lovely Tandy over at Lavender and Lime is hosting this event again this year.  It gives food bloggers across the world a chance to gather and post various scone recipes.  You’d be surprised how many different kinds of scones people can come up with.
